Factors of 3 | Easy Factor Pairs and Prime Factors

ECTI Pakistan - Factors of 3

Contents

The prime number 3 is an odd number too, so it is the smallest prime number. Another interesting fact about 3 is that it is the only natural number that is equal to the sum of its preceding natural numbers. We have  1 and 3 are the only factors of 3.

We can get both, positive and negative factors of 3. Today, you will learn about factors, how to calculate the factors of 3, how to find the prime factors of 3, and how to determine the factors of 3 in pairs.

Factors of 3

Factors of 3: There are two factors of 3 i.e. 1, and 3.

Prime Factorization of 3:  1 × 3

What Are Factors of 3?

If I multiply two numbers and get the number 3 as a product. Factors of 3 are the numbers which to divide 3 and there should be no reminder left. There are two factors of 3 i.e.  1 and 3.

Factors of -3

When we multiply -1 by 3. We get -3 similarly, if we multiply 1 x -3 we also get -3. It is because when one factor is negative, we get a negative product. However,

How to Calculate the Factors of 3?

Here’s a simple process to calculate the factors of 3.

The first step is to write down the number to be factored in. In this case, the number is 3.

Find the product of two numbers that gives 3.

We have 1 × 3 = 3

Therefore, there are two factors of 3, i.e. 1 and 3.

Factors of 3 by Prime Factorization

It is 1 and 3 which is the prime factorization of 3. Unlike the other odd prime numbers, 3 only has two factors, 1 and 3.

Factors of 3 in Pair

Negative pair factors of 3 are also possible because any two negative numbers can also be multiplied together to give a positive number.

The pair factors of 3 are as follows:

Positive Pairs: ( 1, 3) as 1 x 3 = 3

Negative Pairs: (-1, -3) as -1 x -3 = 3

As we know when we multiply two negative numbers, the product will be positive as a result.

Therefore, 1 and 3 are the pair factors of 3.

Similarly, to find the pair factors of -3, we need to multiply only one negative factor to get the negative product.

-1 x  3 = -3

 1 x -3 = -3

Therefore, the pair factors of -3 are ( -1, 3) and ( 1, -3).

Solved Example

Example:

Calculate the common factors of 3 and 62.

Solution:

1, and 3 are the factors of 3.

Factors of 62 are 1, 2, 31, and 62.

Hence the common factor is 1.
